Designing a website can be a daunting task, but it is possible to do it on your own.  It will be time-consuming, and you’ll have to learn how to configure a lot of new practices that you’ve most likely have never done before (especially if you are not a web designer).  In order to design a website, you will need to start the process with the following steps:

Choose a Platform

This is simply choosing the content management system that best fits your needs and budget.  WordPress is one of the more popular choices, and for good reason. With WordPress, it is easier for developers, and SEO’ers to do their magic on your site, should you ever take that route.  Shopify and Squarespace are great options for creating an online store for your products.

Pick a Domain Name and Host

It’s imperative that you buy the domain name for your business as soon as you can.  You don’t want to go through the troubles of jumping through hoops to get the URL for your business, or worse, having to register your business under a new name, and starting over. Picking a host also depends on which platform you decide to use for your CMS. WordPress is usually the CMS that you would need to create a Web Host, and Blue Host and HostGator are the most popular choices to go with.

Pick a Theme

Picking a theme you want your website to look like is the first step of the designing aspect.  If you’ve hired someone to design your website, you would give them examples of other websites’ designs that you like and let him build out the theme to your site.  WordPress, Shopify, and Squarespace offer the ability to add a free theme from their selection. While the choices are pretty limited, we recommend paying for a theme. It will be better for your business in the long run.

Add Your Style and Content

To complete the design of your site, you have to add your finishing touches to it.  This includes the color scheme of the layout, adding content and different header tags, adding photos, and your logo.  This also includes adding any drop-down menus, legal pages, and creating structures for a sitemap.  Once your sitemap is ready, you are ready to submit it to Google Search Console, and then head over to Google Analytics to create your analytics code to put on your website.

Now your website should be done and ready to go. If you are not able or not capable of creating or designing your new website, please feel free to contact us at Cobalt Creative for a free consultation.  We are here and eager to help you get your new website designed and online today!
